EL PRINCIPITO Y EL FAROLERO

THE LITTLE PRINCE AND THE LAMPLIGHTER

The fifth planet was very strange. It was the smallest of all. There was just enough room on it for a street lamp and a lamplighter. The little prince was not able to reach any explanation of the use of a street lamp and a lamplighter, somewhere in the heavens, on a planet which had no people, and not one house. But he said to himself, nevertheless:

El quinto planeta era muy extraño. Era el mas pequeño de todos, Solo había sitio para un farol publico y un farolero. El principito no llegaba a ninguna conclusión acerca de este extraño farol y su farolero, en algún lugar del cielo, en un planeta sin habitantes y ni siquiera una sola casa….Pareceia absurdo, pero era una ocupación hermosa y como era hermosa, era util…

When he arrived on the planet he respectfully saluted the lamplighter.

Cuando llegó al planeta saludó al farolero respetuosamente.

"Good morning. Why have you just put out your lamp?"

Buenos días. ¿Por qué ha usted encendido el farol?

"Those are the orders," replied the lamplighter. "Good morning."

Esa es la consigna, la orden, replicó el farolero. “Buenos días”

"What are the orders?"

¿Cual es la orden, la consigna?

"The orders are that I put out my lamp. Good evening."

“Las ordenes provienen de mi lámpara. Buenas tardes”

And he lighted his lamp again.

Y encendió su farol de nuevo

"But why have you just lighted it again?"

“Pero ¿por qué lo ha encendido el farol de nuevo?

"Those are the orders," replied the lamplighter.

"Esa es la consigna, la orden” respondió el farolero

"I do not understand," said the little prince.

No lo comprendo, dijo el Principito

"There is nothing to understand," said the lamplighter. "Orders are orders. Good morning."

“No hay nada que comprender”, dijo el farolero. “La ordenes son las ordenes”. Buenos días”

And he put out his lamp.

Y apagó su farol.

Then he mopped his forehead with a handkerchief decorated with red squares.

Luego se secó el sudor de la frente y extrajo un pañuelo a cuadros decorado

con cuadrado rojos.

"I follow a terrible profession. In the old days it was reasonable. I put the lamp out in the morning, and in the evening I lighted it again. I had the rest of the day for relaxation and the rest of the night for sleep."

“Sigo en esta terrible profesión. En los viejos tiempos era razonable. Apagaba el farol en la mañana y en al anochecer lo encendía. Tenia el resto del día para descansar y soltarme el resto de la noche para dormir”

"And the orders have been changed since that time?"

Y la consigna, la orden ¿ ha cambiando desde entonces?

"The orders have not been changed," said the lamplighter. "That is the tragedy! From year to year the planet has turned more rapidly and the orders have not been changed!"

Ese es el drama. Las ordenes no han cambiado. Una tragedia.
De año en año el planeta gira mas y mas veloz, y la consigna la orden no ha cambiado.
